Got it set as Long GoP 100Mbps MXF recording the Extreme III 32GB the nanoflash is set to record 1080psf25 (the cam is HQ 1080/25p). Now hit record on the nanoflash and I get a little egg timer on the right hand-side of the record time. Hit record on the cam and it records to SxS (anyway to stop that?). Now I eject the CF card and load it straight into Vegas 8.0c and I just get red frames! Downloaded a sample from the CD website in MXF and that loads fine!

I’ve not got a HD-SDI monitor at the moment so can’t test the video in cam.

The PSP In is checked and the PSP out isn’t.

The nano firmware is 1.0.64. The source is SDI.

Any suggestions as I am pulling my hair out here and I don’t have much as it is :)

With the help of Perrone Ford, I may have found a relatively inexpensive and relatively quick way to convert nano/xdr files into DNxHD, Avid's high quality intermediate codec (intraframe, 8 or 10-bit, 422, up to 220 mbps) that can be edited in multiple NLEs. I am still shopping for an NLE and haven't decided yet, so I am not able to test it all the way through, maybe someone here can offer some input.

The conversion requires the installation of mpeg streamclip (free), the Avid DNxHD codec (free), and calibrated software's XDCam decoder for quicktime ($80), and is as easy as opening a nano .mov file in mpeg streamclip, then converting the resulting file to DNxHD after choosing the appropriate quality settings. I tested this with a 100 mbps long-GOP nano file and it worked fine as far as I can tell (I was not able to open .mxf files in mpeg streamclip in my testing), conversion was fairly quick, you can also do batch conversions of multiple files in mpeg streamclip.

I was mostly looking at this as a way to work in Adobe Premiere and After Effects (which I understand the DNxHD files are fully compatible with once the codec is installed, I read some recent posts that indicated the mainconcept plugin is not compatible with AE at all bit-rates). Obviously the DNxHD files will work in Avid, and supposedly Final Cut and Vegas as well, so this may be an intermediate format to consider for sharing across platforms.

If this is old news I missed it, but it seemed like this could be useful info for some so I thought I'd post it here.

Here are the sources for the required software

This short list should qualify as a "Sticky" thread in this forum:

0) Included accessories - still 1) DC power supply 2) flash card reader? BH Photo doesn't list anything.

1) Short SDI & HDMI cables
I have some custom XLR cables from Trew Audio that don't include the rubber around the mesh sleeve. This makes for a flexible cable that doesn't transmit bumps as much to camera-mounted microphones

2) battery power
More details on ordering battery from Convergent

3) mounting brackets/plates

4) flash cards (Dan Keaton has done a good job in one thread)

It seems like a lot of folks on these forums shoot to Nanoflash and then edit their own material. My only exposure to post production is actually in the pre-production stage where I'll meet with the post folks and make sure I'll be delivering what they require. I bought the Nanoflash just to record my own dailies but at max bit rates the Nanoflash files have less compression than the HDCam tape I usually record onto so I figure I could also give clients the option for file based delivery, right?

My concern is what bit rate/compression combinations (I-frame, Long GOP) actually work with different NLE's in the real world? For me, most of my work is usually cut on some flavor of Avid (usually Nitris/DS I believe), Quantel or occasionally Final Cut. After reading some of Mark Job's postings in regards to Avid MC and butting up against Adobe Premiere/AfterFX's current dislike for the Nanoflash files (I know there are now a few plugin's to work around this with Premiere) there is no way I'd offer a client these files without first offering a few test files at different bit rates for fear that an entire project could be encoded in at a bit rate/compression combination that their post workflow wouldn't accept.

What would be a huge help to DP's like myself who own this little gizmo and would like to offer their clients the files would be a thumbs up/thumbs down matrix of which bit rates/compression combinations work with the popular edit systems and update it with the release of Nanoflash firmware and NLE version upgrades.

It's much better to know a problem may exist and deal with it in preproduction than be unaware of it and have it blow up in post leaving producer/directors to leave with the impression that all Nanoflash files simply don't work for them.

Just my 2¢. Discuss amongst yourselves.

Quick Results:

64GB Compact Flash Becomes Widely Available

It looks like 64GB Compact Flash has come of age! We now have 4 viable manufacturers offering 64GB Compact Flash cards: SanDisk, PhotoFast, Delkin and now Transcend. The Sandisk and Delkin appear to be fast enough for all bit-rates up to 280 Mbps, while the PhotoFast and Transcend work up to 220 Mbps.

Special note regarding the Transcend 64GB card. Past history has shown failures with the 133X Transcend 32GB card and MAC Leopard OS. The 64GB card uses a different CF controller and different memory, so the Leopard problem may or may not be an issue with this card. We are keeping an open mind, until more tests are complete.

Here's a quick summary of the nanoFlash record times for two 64GB CF cards (double these times for the XDR):

18 Mbps -> 896 minutes (almost 15 hours)
35 Mbps -> 440 Minutes (just over 7 hours)
50 Mbps -> 320 Minutes (5.3 hours)
100 Mbos -> 160 Minutes (2.6 hours)
180 Mbps -> 96 Minutes (1.6 Hours)
280 Mbps -> 60 Minutes (1 Hour)

The 64GB PhotoFast ($299) is the current best deal for a large capacity card (1/3 the price of the new "low-cost" P2 card!)

Best-

Dear Video Professional-
nanoFlash, the world’s smallest HD/SD recorder/player, has been a tremendous success. In about 3 months, we have delivered over 550 units to a worldwide base of professional users. The nanoFlash is now found in a wide range of applications, including upgrading the video quality of existing cameras, enabling tapeless workflow, POV and SDI switcher recorder, on-set reviews, and trade show presentations, among others. The nanoFlash has a proven reliability record; including applications in helium balloons shoots at 98,000 feet (at –75 degrees F.), acrobatic airplanes pulling 12 G’s, deep-sea underwater dives, and in the hot-humid rain forests of Papua New Guinea.

If you have not followed the progress of the nanoFlash over the last few months, we have added many new features and capabilities, including:
•	XDCAM optical support; our MXF files can be directly transferred to XDCAM optical media for archival and play-out on Sony HD decks
•	280 Mbps I-Frame and 180 Mbps Long-GOP modes; for master-quality video
•	MPG file support which can eliminate the lengthy video renders associated with DVD and Blu-Ray authoring
•	3:2 pulldown removal which extracts the 1080p24 frames from a 1080i60 input
•	Time-Lapse recording, capture one frame at any interval from once a second to once a day, at the very high-quality level of 280 Mbps
•	PreRecord Cache of 7 seconds (for bit-rates of 100 Mbps and less); great for wild life and nature shots
•	Qualification of 64 GB Compact Flash cards, users can enjoy 5.5 hours of 50 Mbps recording on a single load of two CF cards.
•	ASI Encode and Decode for streaming MPEG2 over SDI coax; great for live news
•	Full SD-SDI support, including playback over SDI
•	Jam-Sync
•	2X/4X/6X Playback speeds
Special Note: Some of these new features will be part of a firmware update expected this week.

Over the next few months we plan to add:
•	8-Channel Audio support, including the ability to add analog audio to embedded audio sources
•	Loop Record, for 24/7 operation in which the box automatically overwrites older footage
•	Redundant Record which creates two identical masters
•	Over / Under crank
•	Hot Swap of Compact Flash cards
•	Delete last clip
•	Creation of up to eight profiles which pre-define all operating parameters, including metadata values
•	GPS logging, which writes the coordinates into the video stream, including the ability to accurately time-sync to GPS time
•	Wireless playback control for presentations, trade shows, etc.

We just posted a very comprehensive FAQ which will likely answer most of your questions. If you need additional information please feel free to call Dan Keaton (++720-221-3861, ++803-278-0941, or ++719-930-1376) or e-mail sales@convergent-design.com

You can also see the nanoFlash in action next week at the InterBee show (Nov 18-20) in Tokyo (Technohouse booth) or at the upcoming Government Video Expo in Washington DC. (Dec 1-3).

Is the first time I try seriously to correct footage from the NANO.
I had to stop my color grading to write here that I'm completely astonished with the masks in the Secondary Rooms.
After few years suffering 420, this is a different planet.
Viva mi NANO.
