INSTEAD I've borrowed (from my camera dealer) a brand new 5D (out of the box) with nice lenses.

BUT - since I've only got a day to learn the camera I need some help how to setup the video settings.

Sure - I could look around, but my mom died yesterday and I don't have the power to look through a lot of threads... so I'm just looking for some quick help to get good settings. Also just a link to a proper thread would be great!

Just wondering if anyone here went to the FPS fest in Brooklyn last night? FPS Fest - film.photo.synthesis
The concept was how there is this convergence in the film/photo world. The line up of work viewed was:

KT Auleta
Philip Bloom
Alex Buono
Amber Gray
Alexx Henry
Andrew Hetherington
Tim Hetherington
Vincent Laforet
Shinichi Maruyama
Candace Meyer
Richard Patterson
Louis Psihoyos
F Scott Schafer
Bob Scott
Noah Webb

What I got out of this is wow we have a long ways to still go as photographers turned indie filmmakers to get any sort of real work out there except eyecandy and cliches from a powerful tool. Don't get me wrong, there was some powerful stuff in this lineup (mostly the doc work by Tim Hetherington and behind the scenes stuff of Louis Psihoyos, "The Cove"). But on the non-tech exploring narratives there seemed to be nothing more then pretty models/girls(and I don't mean women here) in front of camera walking, taking their clothes off or dancing around. The filmmaker actually thinking this as narrative. This isn't a story, it's a pretty girl dancing around. Now I like pretty girls, I like pretty girls dancing around. Just tell/show me why this is happening. Give me a story either visual or abstract, doesn't matter.

I think the biggest "thing" that photographers turning filmmakers need to overcome is that it's no longer about you. I think photographers are used to photography being a frozen frame given to the viewer a moment of the relationship between you(the photographer) and your subject. But with film now you must disappear, for the most part, and you must give the viewer a reason to be sitting there looking. It's expected by the viewer in this medium. I'm not talking experimental or video installation/art. Filmmaking is a different beast. Eyecandy is cheap way to get someones attention to keep watching, but it's not storytelling. Anyways it's what kept popping in to my head last night at this event. Of course I'm not talking about the "stamp" a filmmaker put on their vision and film they want to give to the world (like how you know a Woody Allen film is a Woody Allen film). Woody Allen is a good example actually, his films are always about him, but it's not the relationship between him off camera and the person in front of the lens, at least not 100% of the time. This is one thing photographer has to get over and I don't know if ego will allow it for most.

If anyone else went I would love to hear what they thought.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Mark II, or is this some hardware issue that I should get resolved directly through Canon?

I currently have the 24 - 105 F4 L (77mm filter thread) kit lens and a non L 50mm 1.8 (52mm filter thread). I want to buy a size of filter that is going to be able to be used on my current and all future lenses. My questions are as follows:

1) Are there many lenses that take the largest filter thread of 82mm?

2) Would I be able to use step down rings to accommodate the 77mm filter down to the 52mm of the 50mm 1.8 lens?

3) If I can use step down rings, is there any optical loss?

4) Are there any particular make of step down rings that people have used and are pleased with?

Many Thanks in advance,

I have been recording our high school girls soccer games using my old Sony Digital 8 (DCR-TRV350) camcorder and then creating DVDs directly from the digital 8 tapes using Sony’s standalone DVD burner. The HS soccer games have 40 minute halves so for each game I use two 60 minute tapes and wind up with two DVDs. Quick, easy, and almost hands off operation: no titles, no editing – just the game as I taped it, mess-ups and all. The coach has been using them for instruction - playing them on the schools ordinary DVD players.

I’d like to do better. I’ve been reading about the Canon XH A1S and if I got it right, it records only onto Mini DV Cassettes in something called an HDV format, and It looks like a dandy camera! But the tapeless recording of the Panasonic AG-HMC40 and Panasonic AG-HMC150 in the AVCHD format onto inexpensive SD, SDHC cards seems really efficient. I’m afraid to rewind, erase and reuse tapes, so the cards to DVD could save a lot of money in the long run - even using dual layer DVD blanks.

I am restricted to producing DVDs that will play on any regular DVD player. (The school won’t be buying new PS3s, Blue-Ray decks, or anything else to accommodate something special that I might do. )

My thought is to get a good Prosumer HD camcorder and record each game at a very high quality; edit it on a desktop computer, and then somehow compress it down to the best quality MPEG2 that fits onto a DVD or a DVD-DL so that the coach or anyone else could use it. Would that work? What software would I need to use? It seems like it should it be easier to work with the AVCHD format on the SDHD cards than the Mini DV cassettes – but I get the impression that the AVCHD format is complex to use, and so the reverse is actually true. Thoughts?

All the Quicktimes are there, so are the THM files.
They all have a normal size, but when trying to open it with Quicktime an alert window pops up: "The file is not a movie file."
The files won't work either on Mpeg Streamclip, VLC, Final cut...
The crew went on shooting with the same card which on the following sessions worked fine.
Any ideas? Any help is really appreciated.
Thanks!

I'm having problems with editing my 5D footage that I have converted to ProRes 422 and am editing in FCP 6. I have Canon XHA1 HDV footage on the same timeline. The 5D stuff keeps skipping and is not smooth, and the render time is long.

I was told that the skipping might be happening b/c I do not have a RAID drive and my ProRes 422 HQ files won't run smoothly without a RAID. But there are not other ProRes codecs in Compressor that I can see. Or, does the choppiness have something to do with my mixed source timeline? Or is there SOMETHING I can do to fix this problem?

Looking forward to hearing from anyone who can help! Thanks!
