I am wanting to upgrade my Dell XPS 420 to a high performance video editing system. I'm very new to hardware upgrades and have a couple questions.

RAM:
The 420 supports up to 8GB of DDR2 800 RAM and I want it upgraded to the max. I did some searching at Newegg and came up with this page that lists all the available RAM that should be supported by the 420. I'm leaning toward the A-DATA for the sole reason that has gotten many positive reviews. If you have any other recommendations please let me know.

Hard drive:
My XPS 420 already has one RAID 0 1TB (2x500) hard drive. But have been told may times to never have the OS/software and videos on the same drive. So, I have been looking for a high performance HD to store Windows and my apps on. Then came across the 10,000 RPM WD VelociRaptor. Now, currently my RAID 0 is drive C. Will I need to reassign drive letters to install Windows on the new drive, if yes how is this done? What else needs to be done to successfully transfer Windows to a new drive?

BluRay Drive:
I'm also thinking about upgrading my DVD drive to a BluRay drive. Is the width of these drives universal so BluRay would correctly fit in the old DVD slot?

Operating System:
I'm also wanting to upgrade from Vista to 7. But have heard that 7 has issues with e-sata drives, is this true?

Is there any certain order these should be done in? Should I attempt to upgrade it myself or have a more experienced person do it? If you have any suggestions please let me know. Thanks!

Harm and Pete and any others, this is very off-post, but if you guys could give me your two bits on this question in a separate post or email, I'd sure appreciate it:

Three of us work as a team on all video productions, with 3 workstations now and probably a fourth later. All are quads, all have Production Premium CS3 or CS4, all use Cineform HD, all are in a Gb peer-to-peer network and all use 64bit Win OS (x64 still). All productions are 1920x1080p. Since these are long term productions with a number of target distribution channels, and sub-titled in 21 languages, regular backup and near-oline storage of all material is necessary for corrections and updating. One person does all AE comps and color grading, I am the main editor, and one is our second editor/flash/website/etc, with another soon to join the team.

Main prob is continuously having to duplicate projects and material and backup each ws. We have been seriously looking for a unified workgroup solution that has the throughput and ease of a single project point for all filesharing and backup. Gb ethernet is too slow, but we are a non-profit org. so funds can also be a problem.

Any suggestions? Throughput speed and stability between ws is absolutely essential, as is compatibility between us. Program duplication is necessary, as we often use any empty system for rendering when available, then use laptops for emails, research and smaller stuff.

Sorry again for the offpost, but I've got your attention here and need experienced suggestions with this to try to find a better solution.

Using Pinnacle Studio 10 to make a DVD and or file....

I captured the footage but have a question regarding making a DVD. What has worked best for you when making a DVD using Pinnacle?

1. Rendering directly to a DVD? If so, did you render directly to the DVD disk or to a file first?

2. If rendering in Pinnacle to a "file" and then using Nero Express to burn a DVD (not data DVD) What file format did you render it too AVI, mpeg 2, mpeg 4 etc. so that it will play across most DVD players?

I'm been having a little trouble and think it might be my computer. If you can tell me the settings you used it would help.

Thank you.

PS My thought is to render the video to a "FILE" for DVD authoring but then open Nero Express to do the burn to DVD. I tried using the Pinnacle direct to DVD twice today but the computer seemed to do nothing but hiccup part of the way making the video speed up a bit into chipmunk sounding effects when I played the final DVD.

One other thing to add, I have an external hard drive. I have the render files and aux. files now going to folders on the external hard drive. Is it best to do this or should the aux. files stay on the computer and final render files on external hard drive. What's the best way or does it matter?

Here are some questions:

1. Can I capture the footage into a file on computer and upload it to a server and then, once man in Africa downloads the file to play on his computer, will it already be in the PAL version for him to burn a DVD on his own computer?

2. Is there a free software application that I can load this one hour video into and convert it myself to PAL file and then upload it to an online server for Africa to download, burn to DVD and play it on DVD player there?

3. What do you suggest is the quickest way to convert this, if possible to do it myself or is it best to outsource it to a company that does the conversions?

Thank you,

Advice needed on a RAM upgrade

Hello all,

I am a very happy editor working on Vista x64 with Premiere CS4 on my wonderful system recommended by both Mike McCarthy and Harm Millard over a year ago (8 core 3GHz X5450 xeons - it never fails and I love it).

I am about to go to Windows 7 x64, will eventually have Adobe CS5 x64 and am planning to go from 8GB of ram to 16.

Is that a good idea?

I know as much about RAM as I know about women. So I need some advice again.

The RAM I currently have (8 sticks of) is this: Kingston KVR667D2D8F5/1GI

Judging by the Kingston site, this is all the variety of their RAM that will suit my motherboard (Supermicro X7DWA-N).

But I don't know one from the other or what the appropriate upgrade is. There is only one 16GB kit listed with the same model number prefix as my current ram, but its price is more than double the price of the comperable 8GB kit. What gives?

And am I taking an unneccesary step? Perhaps worst of all is that this type of RAM (FB-DIMMs) is pretty hard to track down over here.
