I was surprised since the PCC-170 is a more expensive mic. So was I unlucky to get a sub par mic or is the U841A simply better? Btw, I recorded a sample of each under the same conditions, mixer and gain, and I could hear a noticeably louder hiss on the PCC-170 during the quite parts when no one was speaking.

Will be used for short films only. Would it be suitable or is it too old, not enough features? Thanks for ANY advice

Forgive me if this ends up having been posted to the wrong section. It seems like a complex problem with which I have had no experience. But somewhere in the mess it involves a DVX100, wireless lav, cutting on a Mac in Final Cut Express, and final output printing to dvtape. The problem referenced below could possibly have arisen anywhere within this chain, and could consequently belong in different forums, but since it's basically audio, I'm gonna post here.

I got an email from a friend who shoots weddings, but doesn't have a lot of the technical expertise to troubleshoot such errors as what she is currently having a problem with.

She shoots weddings on a DVX100, generally using on-cam mic for general audio, group activities, receptions, etc, and using a wireless lav plugged into the cam for the wedding ceremony, specifically to pick up the vows.

She takes the footage into Final Cut Express on her Mac and edits it together, and then prints the whole timeline to a DV tape to send out to some type of post facility to have it put onto DVDs for her clients.

Evidently, with her most recent wedding video, the post facility noted that there was missing audio from the tape. It was taken to a few other facilities and tried in different decks, but the same thing occurred in some machines, but played okay in others. The resulting DVDs were all affected by the dropout of the wireless lav track.

Eventually, she narrowed it down to the fact that the affected audio pertained to only the segments in which the audio was recorded using the wireless lav.

As the video gets to any audio clip on which the wireless lav was present in the mix, the audio dropped out. BUT THE VU METERS CONTINUED TO REGISTER THE SIGNAL, although nothing could be heard.

She couldn't figure out the problem because everything continues to play fine on her Mac. The timeline plays fine in FCE. She exported the timeline to a self-contained Quicktime mov file and the audio played fine in there. She exported the timeline again to DV tape using her DVX as a deck and it printed fine, and the DVX played it back fine with the audio fully intact.

She then went back and played the DVDs from the last several weddings she edited and found that the DVDs from the last 5 weddings are similarly affected..... although evidently none of the clients ever made mention of the problem to her.

So she's been in a panic and feeling overwhelmed about this problem and doesn't know how to fix it. She doesn't know if it will be even possible to recut and repair the earlier productions, but she is curious as to whether she has something set wrong somewhere that is causing the vow audio to drop out for all of her weddings.

Does anyone in these forums have any familiarity with such an anomaly? I will be happy to pass any info anyone can offer on to her and see if she can resolve it. It's been years since I've shot on a DVX and I never fiddled around with the audio settings on it.

I have otherwise never had such an experience myself and don't know where to begin trouble-shooting her problem.

Thanks for any insights y'all may offer.

I will include points from her original email to me below.

-Jon

------------------

From my friend's email describing her audio problem;

"Has anyone ever had this problem??

You videotape a wedding like you always do.......... .2 cameras with one wireless mic on the groom, you have it edited the way you always do - Final Cut, the master of the video gets transferred onto a mini-DV tape for the Master Tape and this situation has always worked perfectly (for years)...... ...until now.

what could have gone wrong if this is happening?

What things could have changed perhaps by accident and maybe not noticed to cause this; at any stage of the process..... ......the camera, the computer, the duplicating equipment??

The final Final Cut version in computer of the wedding has perfect sound.
The mini-dv Master copy made here has perfect sound.
It has perfect sound when played on an both DVX cams here.

BUT

in sending it out to be transferred to DVDs - no one has been able to do it, AND
it plays differently in different DV cameras and decks! So far it has been tried in at least
9 machines.... .including a DVCam machine at the Oakland Raiders Media Room and at KTVU Ch.2.

In some machines you can hear the vows perfectly (where the wireless is in use) and other machines you can't. In some machines the sound
drops off completely - although vu meters shows there is sound.

What is going on?!

S.O.S.!!!!!"

I got a 3 week shoot coming up, and I'll be sound mixing for a 2x RED set up. I'll be using my SD 702T as the timccode (TC) master to sync the two RED's and another digital recorder (R-4 Pro, for extra iso tracks). The film is to be for NTSC broadcast, so both RED's will be shooting at 23.98.

Going over the 702Ts' manual about optimal TC settings, my thoughts were that I run the TC gen in Free Run Mode, and the TC Gen Rate set at 47.952(F).

I'm still a little confused on the difference between the usage of 47.952F vs. 48.048F relative to what the RED's are set at. Maybe another Sound Devices user can help clarify for me?

My other question has to do with the time period of our shoot (3 weeks) and using the Free Run Mode for the TC. Since the TC Gen clock will repeat every 24 hours, how is the editor software able to distinguish files that get stamped with similar TC from day 1 versus day 8? Maybe I'm missing the fact there is also meta data of the date files were recorded too? (I guess that would solve my question).

ie:

Day 1 - Scene 33, Take 2, TC start (01:20:05:11) TC end (01:22:10:03)

Day 8 - Scene 144, Take 1, TC start (01:20:05:11) TC end (01:22:10:03)

I haven't run a long shoot with TC sync the entire time yet, but I do know it's importance and necessity from a post point of view, so any clarification on my example would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not huge on audio so excuse me if this is basic stuff. My equipment first: XHA1 with RODE NTG2 microphone.

I filmed a concert with unfortunate results on the audio side. Thankfully it wasn't a paid gig so I shouldn't get in much trouble. Anyway, while I was filming I noticed that even though I turned the audio level down, the audio was still sounding distorted through my headphones. I looked through some camera audio settings and couldn't find anything that might help. It was too late to do anything about, so I left it knowing the band is just watching it to critique themselves and not for marketing purposes or anything, but I'm still upset that I can't use the footage for it if i I wanted to. I read some pretty good reviews on the NTG2 mic so I guess I was expected a lot better.

So, was the concert simply too loud for the mic? Or is there something I can do to control how much the mic picks up?

Thanks in advance!

I've been working with the Sennheiser 416 P48 mic and loved it. Worked wonderfully outside and almost all my shoots. But I'm now looking for an indoor mic to compliment my equipment and thought that I'd ask here. I've been using the 416 inside, which of course worked well enough, but I know that there are far better mics (non-shotgun) for indoor shoots. Any suggestions you may have will be greatly appreciated, as I just don't know much about which mics are better for particular situations.

My camera, a Sony FX7, doesn't have onboard XLR jacks, and a BeachTek or comparable XLR adapter won't be cost-effective or convenient for me to buy, and I haven't located a local dealer that rents them yet.

Anyway, I'm going to be filming these in indoor (kitchen, living room, etc.) and outdoor (backyard, park, etc.) settings, and want the sound to come through a bit clearer than what I'd get with the camera's onboard mic.

The videos will be delivered online, so insanely high quality isn't a necessity. Cost is the foremost issue, and I think that $75 is really the highest I can go; I'm not going to be paid a large amount of money for these videos, and I'd like to be able to kick back some of my profits to the interviewees rather than tell them that I dropped it on equipment.

Any ideas?

I have downloaded the PDF on this page, but it's dated November 2000. I am unsure if things have changed regarding wireless.

Put simply:
1) Which wireless system should I consider buying (budget undecided now, but I want quality). Sennheiser Evolution G2 100 series?
2) What frequency should they be operating in?
3) Am I breaking any laws buying a wireless system and importing into Australia?

headphone jack - the headphone jack on my reciever sounds awful, extremely noisy. Is this typical or might I have a bad unit? It's not a huge deal since the actual outputs sound ok but just curios if others had this issue.

Mic upgrade - what have you guys found is a good solid upgrade for the included lavs?

Gain staging - what type of levels have you used to get the cleanest signal?

I'm sure I'll figure this out over time but figured I would quiz some of you pros to get a jump start
thanks!
