Gag me with a spoon

Just for grins and giggles I tried out the Burn-DVD-From-The-Timeline (oops, I mean storyline) feature. It was 160 football game clips from DSLR, no editing, no effects, no titles. The project was 45-minutes long. It took 2 1/2 hours to import and transcode, and another 2 hours for it to spit out the DVD on my (late 2010) MacBook Pro w/8-GB.

Remember .mpeg1? Well, this made those old .mpeg1 files look good.

Why did you transcode on import? Also FCP7 did a bad job of DVD's from the timeline as well, it's not just FCPX. I've made a couple of DVD's from FCPX going via compressor and they looked great.

I transcoded because Apple swears everything is wonderful if you do. I tried the DVD-From-The-Storyline feature because it was there and I wanted to see how it worked. I already knew how it works in FCP7/Compressor, but I wanted to see how this feature worked.

It did not save any time, in fact I think it actually increased it. And the quality was god-awful. SO why do they even pout it in the program?

Now, I tried the same feature (shorter) only using the BlueRay burn from the timeline to a DVD blank and it worked fairly well. I was impressed. It took a long time, but it worked and it looked decent.

EDIT: I just tried burning the same exact timeline via the BluRay-from-timeline feature. The 45-minute project took almost 5 hours to process and burn, but it got all 45-minutes on a DVD blank and it looks pretty good.

When I see a post titled "Gag me with a spoon" - for some reason I'm compelled to read it!

I have had mixed experience going straight to DVD using HD source material from FCPX. Two things I do, first I export a ProRes movie. Then I use Compressor to make the DVD. For whatever reason it takes a lot less time and I have the option of changing the MPEG codec to 2-pass. Apple changed the default direct to DVD codec to one-pass MPEG.
