25p to 24p
 

My Sony FS700 camera was in the PAL region setting… and I accidentally recorded 1080p at 25fps rather than 24fps. (the codec is AVCHD)

I need to convert the footage to 24p.
In the past I've used hardware at a lab, but I shot this for free and I'm paying for the conversion.
I don't want to compromise the quality, but I liked to spend as little as possible.
Any suggestions?

Are you going to do the editing yourself? If so what software will you use? Most will allow you to mix frame rates and you will never know in the final product.

If you aren't going to edit it you can still use your editing software to do the conversion.

Usually 25p is time-stretched into 24p for a one on one frame transfer. The sound is changed and you might need to shift the pitch slightly if you have music on the footage. You can use a conversion program like Compressor. In Compressor you will have to make a custom setting where you specify that you want one-on-one frame conversion otherwise the program will blend frames. If you don't care about blended frames, such as with a seated interview, FCPX does a very good job of frame rate conversion.

Depending on what you're editing software is, you can just drop the footage in a 24 track and edit without any problems. I haven't done this myself with 25p but I dont think you would be able to see any difference, I usually do it with 60p though.

I have mixed 24p shots and 25p shots. Nothing to worry about. Put all those in FCP X timeline and export to 24p.

In FCP X, when you start a project depending on the first clip it can set the frame rate of 25p or 24 p. Or you can set it on your own.

I haven't done this mixing with narrative. However, I have done it with wildlife shots. I am sharing a link here. The first three mins is shot in C300 at 25p. The next is at 24p with a Canon DSLR (1D Mark IV). The final output is exported at 25p.

Another easy way to do this is right in FCPX:

Say you have a 25p clip in a 24p timeline. Just click on/highlight the 25p clip and then go to the retiming options (the little stopwatch icon on the middle right of the final cut interface). Select "Conform Speed" and the program will stretch out your non-standard clip to match the project settings. Handy if the motion is non-descript and doesn't have any speech.

This is also very convenient when you're shooting 30p or 60p and want slow-mo in a 24p timeline without any frame blending or "close enough" manual time stretching. Conform speed spaces out the frames in the source footage to match the project timebase. Done.
