Insert Editing, Why Won't Clips Appear In The Timeline?

I have FCPX 10.1.4

Every time I attempt an insert edit the clip appears under the Timeline in a Secondary Storyline I guess, with a gap in the Timeline of exactly the same length as the inserted clip.

I want all inserts into the Timeline, I do not want a Secondary, or Tertiary Storyline. Similarly I want to drag clips from one part of the Timeline to another without any activity on a Storyline.

I am indifferent to the length of the project by the way.

Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong will be appreciated.

How are you inserting the clips? I just type "W" and it goes in the primary timeline.

I use the insert edit "downward arrow" but the same problem occurs if I use "W".
