FCPX to Toast for DVD / Blu-Ray - Discs Skipping

Fairly new to FCPX (switched from Premiere > Encore about 4 months ago) and to create my discs I am sharing my file from X via Pro Res 422 then burning the optical discs using latest version of Toast.

The discs play on my blu-ray player but 50% of my recent batch (first batch of discs sent since moving to this setup) have said the discs either do not play or freeze/skip. (They tried playing in computer, DVD and Xbox players -- but each disc that was sent back to me played in my Blu-Ray and computer).

I almost never (99% success rate) had this with Encore for authoring discs.

Has anyone had this experience with Toast and X?

I understand there is a option to create discs from X (however the menu graphics are limited that is the only reason I did not use them from the beginning) that I will try, just looking for some feedback from you fine group of people first :)

Thank you!

Two things that caused what you described in the past for me were:
1. Burning too fast. No faster than DVD 8x.
2. Too high of a bit rate.

Older set top dvd players can't handle either of those things

Btw toast does a crap job encoding Compressor is superior.

Pete, thanks for the tip about speed and Compressor.

I created 3 sets of discs last night using the Share > DVD and Blu-Ray option in FCPX.

The graphical aspect is less desirable than Encore (full screen photo with custom menu) and even Toast, but if they play then bonus, we win.

What would be a suitable bit rate for DVD and Blu-Ray?

For dvd 9 Mbs is the accepted limit. I like to play it safe use 8 as my ceiling. I haven't burned a bluray in a while so I don't know the bit rate.

Thanks... in FCPX, where is the bitrate settings?

I don't see those options and google search didn't help :(

Also couldn't find how to change the write speed in X.

Re: FCPX to Toast for DVD / Blu-Ray - Discs Skipping

I have only done this once so far but I had DVDs that were skipping and stuttering. The solution was to create a disc image from the file and then use that to create the DVD using Toast. It's a while since I did it and I am not at my computer so I cannot explain the steps just now but definitely give it a look

Seems like Toast was the culprit.

Ive since burned directly from X and so far, so good (cross yer fingers!)

Thanks.

Usually it's the burning speed that causes problems. You can pick a slower burning speed in Toast but not in FCPX or Compressor. That said, I have never had a problem with BluRay discs directly out of FCPX or Compressor. Sometimes with Toast but those problems happen usually during the burn and the disc is ruined.
