PAl to NTSC
 

Hi I am trying to find a way to convert a 63 minute documentary from PAL to NTSC. I tried the 'Atlantis' trail version which looked good at first but when I tried to burn a DVD any movement was very jerky. I assume from lack of enough frames. Is there another way to do this that actully works. Thanks.

What other set up do you have? if you have Final Cut Studio, Compressor does a pretty conversion.

If you're looking for a free alternative, JES deinterlacer (http://www.xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html#DEI) does standards conversion pretty well too.

I'm surprised Atlantis was jerky. Are you sure there might not have another problem, such as fields in the wrong order?

Hi Dylan. Thanks for the reply. Yes I do have FCP studio but I'm not sure which output to go for in Compressor with my problem. Can you advise? Also could you explain 'fields in the wrong order' with Atlantis. I am a bit of a novice in this conversion area! Thanks Robb

Rob, import your NTSC Project into compressor (drag and drop will probaly do it) and when you open a compressor setting, you can tell it to convert to PAL in the inspector. I've done a few projects like this and it works pretty well but it's slow.

JES deinterlacer is probably faster but then you end up with a DV file or something and you'll have to convert that to a DVD file anyway. it's not as controllable and high powered as using compressor but it's still pretty good and much simpler.

As for the fields thing, best just to google "interlacing" and you'll get plenty of info.

Thanks for that. Just wondering if the problem is because I am going from PAL to NTSC not the other way round and need additonal frames. 'Atlantis' claims to convert both ways. Any thoughts on that? I will try the other suggestions. I did give up on Compressor as my 3 minute trail was still cranking away after 4 hours. How much time is 63 minutes going to take? last time it was 12 hours.... I know one needs patience but I had other things that needed attention today-Robb

Thanks Robert. After reading the info at the site it looks like you have convert clip by clip which might be very time consuming for my 63 minute doc. Perhaps I'll try the other ideas first.

Not true - you can convert an entire sequence in one go. RT*M. (No offence!) :-)

Thanks Martin. No offense taken. I must have read the info on the site incorrectly. I assume you've had experience going from PAL to NTSC. Have you any idea how long it takes to process 63 minute with 'Natress' ???
