Audio Noise Reduction: Sony vs. Soundtrack Pro

I'm new to the Mac and would like to know if the noise reduction function in Soundtrack Pro 2 is considered comparable with Sony's noise reduction plug-in (which I've used in Vegas for years).

My first Video project on the Mac is for a woman's choir in a church with a noisy air handling system. I was not able to do anything useful (too many noise reduction artifacts) with Soundtrack Pro's noise reduction so I exported the audio to see what I could do on my old PC (running Vegas and the Sony plug-in) and was able to clean it up reasonably well.

My real question is, does it sound like should I missed something with Soundtrack Pro noise reduction or should I consider getting something else, perhaps a Waves noise reduction plug-in?

Many Thanks,
Steven

The best, most cost effective and easiest to use software noise reduction tool that we've either tested (and now use all the time) is SoundSoap from BIAS.

Another vote for SoundSoap -- it performs magic!

My very recent experience with Soundtrack Pro's noise reduction feature has been very good. I had decent recordings to start with - just a little hiss, and HVAC noises in some channels - but the results were so good and easy to obtain that I was wondering if Apple has made improvements to the algorithms used in Soundtrack Pro recently. I remember it used to be much more difficult - or maybe I just got lucky a few times in a row.

Has anybody else experiences this lately?

Robert and Vic, thanks for the tip. I see that BIAS sells "SoundSoap 2" and "SoundSoap Pro". Any opinions/recommendations about one versus the other? (I just work with live recordings -- mostly video). I see that there is a free trial period -- am planning to check it out.

Martin, thanks for sharing that. I've got Soundtrack Pro 2.0.2 but am a novice with it.

Just for grins I've attached a noisy 20 second audio clip from that video project mentioned above. (I'm curious to know if I'm simply not using the Soundtrack Pro noise reduction correctly -- and/or what the alternatives are).

Many Thanks,
Steven

Steven --

SoundSoap Pro obviously has more bells & whistles, but SoundSoap 2 did the job for me. I didn't need anything more.
