(!) Codec not found. Compression type w/o Card? HELP!

Okay, this is a real hair puller for me and I hope someone may have the magic answer.

A couple of weeks ago I purchased a Sony EX1. I shot some clips in 1080P30.
Okay, that was a test and I moved on to work on the next performance.

I created a new project and in EASY SET UP chose DV/NTSC Anamorphic.
I went the the sequence and made sure it was also set up for DV.
I changed scratch disks to the new folders I created for this project.
I digitized several hours worth of footage from a multi camera shoot ALL of it shot on Panny DVX100A set for SQUEEZE - 30P.

I started to edit and tried to render out the time line and got the following error message:
_______________________________________________
(!) Codec not found. You may be using a compression
type without the corresponding hardware card.
_______________________________________________

HUH? THIS IS A DV PROJECT using DV FOOTAGE. My guess is that FCP has somehow locked into the EX1 format and cannot be switched to anything else.

I have thrown away preferences in library, started new projects, etc. etc. etc.
The same damn message keeps coming up every time I try to render it, export it or print it to video.

HELP!!!!!!!!

Yikes, that sounds odd and very frustrating!

It does sound like there is some setting that is still stuck in EX1 mode, or something like that. If trashing your prefs didn't work, there may be a setting somewhere else.

Try installing either Preference Manager (which I use and love) or FCP Rescue (I havn't used it, but others say good things) and use them to trash your preferences. Then you can make new prefs and back them up.

I find Preference Manager a godsend as I frerquenctly switch between projects which requir slightly different or vastly different settings (NTSC to DVCPROHD, 24fps to 25fps, HDCAM to DigiBeta deck control, etc) and this little (free) baby keeps things well tuned. I can't rav about it enough.

Interesting, I am getting the same thing right now. OUT OF THE BLUE! Everything worked fine and suddenly this I feel like going bonkers.

It is interesting that it occurs only after some time, it must be some type of footage on the timeline I am not aware of. Some people elsewhere suggested that it could be JPEG sequence in CMYK mode. But I do not recall having anything in CMYK. It is a mystery.

Ok, after a while I found what the problem was. In my case, it was not JPEG but a footage in different resolution and codec which I added into a sequence with different settings. Upon removal and transcoding the footage to match the setting of the sequence everything works again fine.

My two cents.
