25p shooting for 23.98p editing in FCP6.04

Hi,

I've shot almost all of my material in 23.98p (F900 1080p, Varicam 720p, EX1 1080p).

Now I am thinking of using the new Sony PDW700, which does not shoot at 23.98p, but does shoot at 25p and obviously 59.94i.

I was thinking we could shoot footage at 25p and then conform 25p to 24p in FCP, but I understand this is for 24p, not 23.98p.

FCP does a great job with mixing footage from different codecs and framerates in our timeline. For example, we routinely use 29.97 archival material captured from DVD and VHS and integrate it with the 23.98p ProResHQ timetime.

If I want the new footage to work interchangeably with my 23.98p material, does this make sense to use 25p on this camera? Should I use 59.94i and remove the pulldown in FCP? Or is it just impossible and I should wait to use the nano-flash which records 23.98 from the HDSDI? Or even wait for the native 23.98p board for this camera coming in June (too late for this production) and rent in the meantime.

thx,

Jim

Seems you've already hit on your solution: rent the camera that shoots the format you need. No need to make more work for yourself in post.

IT works!

We tried it with the EX1. We created 25p footage to put into a 23.98 1080p ProResHQ timeline and we could not tell the difference between the original 25p and the 23.98p timeline. If anything, at times the rendered 23.98p version looked better than the original in certain movement situations.
