XDCAM Import to FW Drive

Hi everyone,
I have been attempting to import XDCAM422 footage into Final Cut Pro 6.0 using XDCAM Transfer software. The source I am using is either the PDW-HD1500 deck or the PDW-700 camera. Right after a clip begins to import from either one of these devices the disc dismounts from my Mac and the process is aborted. This dismounting occurs when I am trying to import the footage to external FW800 drives. The importing process works when I import the clips to the system drive.

Has anyone else had a problem with importing XDCAM footage directly onto an external firewire drive?

Thanks
Scott

Have imported thousands of clips using Sony's XDCAM Transfer to external FW hard drives ... not from either of those specific devices tho. Would recommend making sure you have the latest version of XDT (currently 2.8) as the last updates have all been about XDCAM HD422 support.

Best
Andy

Andy,
Thanks for the response. I do have version 2.8 of the XDCAM transfer loaded. Does anybody else have any other thoughts?

Thanks
Scott

Just a guess...

Maybe the FW800 drive is full?
Maybe the FW800 drive isn't fast enough to support the transfer data?
Maybe try reformatting the FW800 drive (don't use journaling)?

Make sure you don't have them on the same FW bus. The bus has to run at the speed of the slowest device which would be the camera. That will kill the drive.

You'll need a second FW card installed to separate the two busses.

However.. you have other options. You have gigabit ethernet support from the camera and/or the deck. You can bring them on line as network attached storage and point XDCAM Transfer to that volume for its source. Gigabit networking will be faster anyway.

I "think" the PDW-HD1500 deck or PDW-700 camera are both USB and he wants to transfer to a FW800 drive. So that means he's not sharing the FW bus....right? (I could be wrong on that one)

Sorry, that's incorrect. Those are not USB devices.
