I purchased the JVC deck about 3 weeks ago. I'm using it with FCP 4.X (whatever the latest update is) on a G4 with OS 10.2. Works perfectly for me. Go figure.

What version of 10.2 are using. Later versions had some FireWire issues. In 10.3, Apple had to redo the FireWire extensions. One of the reason a product will not be certified is the fact that it performs inconsistently on different OS, 3rd party hardware etc. It's not surprising that it works on some and not others.
