NLE on Linux?
 

Are there any good nle programs that run on linux?
i want to upgrade my POS old imac, and ive just heard they run linux quite well... and my brother says linux is a better OS in all ways <thats why OSX is based on it.> so why not experiment? i suppose its not even worth my time if nothing good will run on it.

also... lcds are getting cheap. how about cutting the imac in half, losing the crt, adding a hinged < laptop-like> lcd to it. make a laptop that you dont want in your lap, and cant run off a battery!

OS X and Linux are both based on Unix. I don't know of any Linux based NLE's that even come close to FCP or even iMovie.

Unfortunately, I doubt that will even run on an iMac. Dual processor Athlon's are recommended, as is a render farm.

Actually, I only pointed to that post because it's the only Linux editor I've ever seen.

Honestly, I think it would be a wasted and misguided effort to monkey with putting Linux on a Mac. If someone was basically a PC technician who just wanted to tinker as a pastime I might understand such an undertaking. But why in the world would anyone who wanted to learn editing waste endless time and money fooling with such a hobby horse undertaking...with a Mac, no less?

If you're going to tear-up a computer at least start with a cheaper PC.

Understood, I just didn't want people to get too excited about a free NLE. It works and works rather well, I understand. But it is not a low cost alternative. The front end computer and render farm method of editing put the costs into the professional realm.

and thats why i ask BEFORE loading linux. besides, my brother IS the pc tech who wants to tinker.... not that ill just hand over the only machine ive got right now.


how bout the lcd? i wasnt kidding about that. anyone have an apple 15" studio display to donate? i could buy a cheap one, but id like to minimize the "frankinstien-look"....

That's really not a very practical idea, either.

If I understand what you're proposing with the remark, "make a laptop that you dont want in your lap, and cant run off a battery!"...

By the time you hacked-up the casing, somehow managed to remove the CRT and somehow attached an lcd panel to what's left, what do you think you will really have accomplished? The circuitry to run that CRT is not trivial and not low-power, either.

Again, I just have to wonder what your objective could really be?

Goal? I suppose thats not really how I think of things....
Have something no one else has?
Any way, my day job is arcade tech. I think I can handle monitor electronics. Ive worked with plenty of plexiglass. I wouldnt bother until i had a new main editing machine. This would be a secondary, slightly more portable rig.
