Multicam editing with HDV and Xdcam
 

I'm hoping Someone else has already found a way around this. I own a Sony V1U a Sony Z1U and just bought a Sony EX1. I always shoot in 1080 30p and the ex1 is at 1920x1080 and the other cameras are 1440x1080. I assumed (bad idea) that since they can all play on the same timeline thanks to FCP 2 that they could also seemlesly do a multicam clip. Well I converted the EX1's footage to apple pro res so they would have the same codec, but now I'm getting the error that the frame sizes aren't the same. Is there a way to convert one of these to make them alike? Which one would keep the quality closest to the same? In the future how can I make this more seemless? The main root of all the is that I had read that the EX1 can shoot in HQ and SQ (hdv), BUT if your wAnting to shoot in 30fps the EX1 doesn't have An SQ setting like it does for 60 and 24. BIG mistake!

Capture the HDV as HDV then transcode those clips into 1920x1080 ProRes. That's the only way to do it currently since, as you know, capturing HDV as ProRes via FW results in 1440x1080 clips which is lame, IMO.

Ok, So ill recapture HDV footage as HDV, but then how do you transcode to Pro Res? Do you use Compressor? I thought that it would still keep the frame size at 1440 x1080, not up size it to 1920 x1080

I think you can use clipwrap to transcode to pro res now:http://www.clipwrap.com/index.php

You can force compressor to scale to 1920x1080 if you just duplicate one of the presets (the prores 422 preset) and turn off automatic dimensions (100% of source) and then select 1920 x 1080.

You could also use media manager to recompress from within FCP based on a sequence preset. That is probably the easiest thing to do.

When you force it to 1920x1080 It then changes the aspect ratio..

The aspect ratio of the frame should stay the same (16x9) but the pixel aspect ratio gets changed from unsquare to square.
