Death Race text effect
 

You guys seen that text effect in Death Race 2000 where the text is in the scene, but behind the foreground subject matter? How is that done? Can anyone refer me to a tutorial?

The other option is to do this (which I JUST figured out how to do on my own!), in Vegas

Keep in mind this is example for ONE frame only. You would have to make individual car masks for every other frame (in my most recent vid I had to do this, not sure if it will be every frame in your project -- just go through frame by frame to see if the position of your object changes. If it's static, then you only need 1 mask).

1st track is yellow Le Mans text.
2nd track is the mask.
3rd track is the footage

On the 2nd track, you add Mask Generator with the settings as shown. Make sure alpha is checked. Key to this is having the Text track in Parent Composite mode (by clicking the arrow that points downward, below the ! icon above it). To the left of that arrow is a green icon with an x, this needs to be on multiply.

Here's a interesting tutorial using the new Mocha motion tracking plug-in for After Effects. Let's see if I can explain how it works:

1) You draw a mask around a moving object (like a car)
2) Using Mocha you can track that object which will in turn adjust the shape of your mask to track the moving object (mind blowing!)
3) Then once you have the car cut out, you can easily place it into another scene, place text behind it, etc....
