FCP Audio (and otherwise too)
 

Hi all, I'm usually in HDV forum on here. But, I'm using FCP now really intensely!

Question:

I've got a G5 with the Klipsch 5.1 surround sound system. When I'm sitting there idol...not clicking around on anything that has audio at all it's silent. But, when I play something....anything at all it kicks in with white noise. After a clip plays (and it plays fine) the white noise will disappear.

Is this normal with external speakers? I'm trying my best to figure out why this is happening. It's almost like when the audio isn't going through the system the speakers go into sleep mode.

Hmm, I'm using Digital Optical input and output. Is that would you mean? Also, I imported the audio files (these files are downloaded from www.freeplaymusic.com - they are m4a files)into iMovie 4.0.1 and they play perfectly. In addition to that I imported a completely different audio file into FCP HD (a wav file).

Does FCP HD support m4a files?! I should have looked that up. But, they are the best source files to choose from at www.freeplaymusic.com and figured they would work!

I think I've found the answer...and it's not good! I'm not going to even bother with the process because (apparently "AAC" files AKA "m4a" are lossy formats and FCP doesn't like them).

Yup, you can try converting (export>import) through QuickTime, but I don't think you'll be happy with the result.

There is a free program that converts AAC files into AIFF. It's called aacConverter. I've used it several times to put AAC files into FCP4, and it works like a charm.

EDIT: I should also add that this program WILL allow an AAC file purchased through iTunes to be converted to AIFF. That might also come in handy.

After some quick research I found out that WAVs are better than AACs...WAVs are uncompressed.

Why would Apple claim to have such great audio from iTunes when their files aren't the best? I have some AAC's and they hiss with white noise!
