Best Way To Start
 

In your opinion what is the best way to start capturing?

I will be editing at school, using FC. I guess buying a hardrive is the way to go. Cause puting it on more than one cd would cause a problem. Damn... more money to spend but at least the editing room is for free.

An external drive is usually a good way to go. I have one for my
PC here and I frequently hook it up to my other PC or take it with
me to work/friends to exchange footage etc. Quite handy.

The thing is I can't save my stuff on the school computers, for one I don't trust it, and for second other people use it.

Also, I won't be using my computer because I have a PC and I'm editing it on FC.

So if I have my capturing done into a external hardrive, I can always have it there.

You might want to look into a drive that is powered via the FireWire cable to cut down on the hassle of setting it up. I believe wiebetech.com has some well rated ones.

What did you mean by that? You can't capture your media and store it on CD-R to edit from...just so you know.

As for the drive...make sure to get a firewire drive that is 7200 RPM with an 8MB cache. THose are the minimum specs. You can find some decent ones for under $200.

What do you mean by this? I'm not clear.

I'm looking at the Lacie 250GB isnt that the same thing.

I don't know about the Lacie drive you're looking at, but almost all external firewire drives have a separate cord for power that you need to find a power plug for. It is more expensive, but you can find drives that only need the firewire cable in order to work (you are using macs so you don't have to worry about 4pin vs 6pin cables). It just cuts down on the number of cables you have to deal with, but may not be worth the money.
