Ian, cheers for responding to the OT remark...For the record, folks, if I wanted to spend my life assembling and disassembling this stuff I would have become an electronic technician.

And oh yes, the latest news is that Jolly Old St. Nicholas (Kris Kringle, Father Christmas, Pere Noel, Santa Claus) looked after me well, and I am writing this post on a shiny new G4 Aluminum PowerBook, 1.5 GHz w/SuperDrive & AirPort Extreme; and the now-repaired machine that has been the subject of this thread is now going on eBay (with full disclosure of the repair).

Cheers to everyone for thinking through this thing with me. I appreciate it.
