How do you change the indexing schedule?
 

I'm tearing out my hair here. We're on dialup and every time I try to download or upload a file of any length the indexing box comes up and makes my computer freeze. $#%$! Why do they make stuff like this so hard to find? I'm on OS9.2 by the way.

Phew, you're testing my memory of Mac OS 9! One of the big annoyances in the later versions was that you could not completely turn off indexing. There is a control panel (or maybe a preference withing "sherlock" itself?) that can help though. You can set indexing to a minium, and also set it to run at an hour when you aren't normally using your computer.

Sorry, I can't put my finger on this any better. Just a couple days ago I had to reinstall OS9 on an old Mac and it reminded me how far we've come with OSX. Not the advice you want... but if all possible try to upgrade to any version of OSX greater than 10.2. You will find big improvements in performance and a much better human interface.

Just hopped into classic (ugh)... Open Sherlock (using the apple menu) and choose preferences from the edit menu. You can use "only index items with this label" to prevent most things from being indexed. Move the "system responsiveness while indexing" slider all the way to the left. Looks like I was wrong about setting the time to index, I don't see that here. Must have been something from an earlier version?

Thanks Boyd. Yeah, we were planning to make the upgrade in a couple of months. It's just a pain having to upgrade all of our software.
