Getting old DVDs back into NLE

Wondering if someone can help me.

I've got video footage from several DVD videos that I want to re-edit back in FCP.

The only way I can do it is to run a DVD player to my JVC MiniDV/VHS deck via S-Video, then from my JVC deck to my MAC via firewire. Unfortunately, I lose resolution (digital to analog to digital).

Is there any way I can retain the digital image going from DVD disk to FCP?

Thanks,
Mel

Mel,

There is another way to get it into FCP, but there is no way around losing resolution. The video on the DVD is already compressed and converting it back to DV will not regain the original resolution.

Try this free program for converting DVD video to DV as well as other types of footage.

MPEG Streamclip

I think there are at least 2 or 3 threads covering this same subject. There are some applications you can use to convert the footage. Try a quick "search" and you should find the info, the threads are less than a month old. I think one app is called DVDxDV Pro, find it on VersionTracker.com

due to hard drive space issues, I deleted not only my footage, but the FCP project files thinking I already have what I need on DVD. Hell will freeze over before I pull out my miniDVs and recreate all the projects that I had on DVD.

I guess you live and learn from your mistakes.

What do yo mean by that? Do you have the original footage you want to re-import into FCP on miniDV? And if so, why not refer to them? They are the originals and would get you the best quality...or did you recycle them and record over them, thus your statement about learning from your mistakes.

I NEVER toss original tapes...for anything. First off, rolling over them and using them again isn't wise for they might not completely wipe out the first image and you are left with a freaky double image (I remember a posting from some site where I guy did this for a wedding and all the footage was unsuable...he lost the job and respect). Secondly, you might THINK you never need that footage again, but there may be a time that you do. I recall not 6 months ago I needed footage of mountainous landscape, but couldn't afford the stock footage. I then remembered these PSAs I shot WAY back in college in Montana where I recorded a lot of b-roll on 3/4". I dug and dug and found the masters...had them transferred to beta and had all the footage I needed. Who knew?
