need help xh a1 hdv 1080p24

hello,

new to film. still learning. trying to understand. looked for answers to my questions on net, but wasting valuable time. hope someone here can help.

shot a narrative film with my canon a1s in hd with the 24p setting. captured all of the footage onto my macbook pro via firewire into fcp 6.0.6 with the 1080p24 fcp preset, capture and sequence settings.

almost finished editing timeline and preparing to create dvds for distribution. very confused. many questions. any and all help and info will be greatly appreciated.

1. can i create an hd dvd from my hd timeline in fcp that will play on any dvd player?

2. if not, was it useless for me to have shot the entire piece in hd? should i have shot it in sd?

3. what is the difference between hd and sd, just not getting it.

4. what is the first, 2nd, 3rd, etc. steps to put my full timeline onto a dvd, where do i start?

5. do i have to downconvert my hd timeline to an sd timeline?

6. will that compromise my images?

7. essentially, how do i get my hd timeline from fcp onto a dvd that anyone can play in their dvd player?

8. then, how do i create an hd dvd from timeline and what do people need to watch it, a hd dvd player or an hd tv, or both?

i realize these may be basic questions. i appreciate any help.

I've been accused of being way too verbose in the past, so I'll just answer as quickly as possible:

1. No. No regular DVD player will play any form of HD video.
2. No, and no.
3. HD has six times the sharpness of SD.
4. This is all in the manual and the tutorials.
5. If you want to go to regular DVD, yes. If you want to stay HD, no. But you can do this on export, I believe; you don't need to do anything to the timeline itself.
6. Yes, of course.
7. Again, all in the manuals and tutorials. Render, downconvert, burn to regular DVD. It won't be HD.
8. Apple doesn't support Blu-Ray. Render/export in HD, don't downconvert, find external app to burn Blu-Ray as well as external or third party Blu-Ray burner. Yes, clients will need BD player and HDTV to view in HD. No regular DVD player will play any form of HD. I'm guessing the first step is something like File > Export or Render or Make Movie.

I'm sure some FCP users can walk you through the steps -- this should probably be in the FC forum.
