help with workflow hd 1080p24 to sd
 

hello to all,
in dire need of some direction. very confused. not sure of proper workflow. shot a narrative with canon a1s. used the hdv 24f settings. captured via firewire into fcp 6.0.6. used the 1080p24 capture and timeline settings. final product when i view in timeline on my mbp looks great. once it was rendered even my smooth cam filter shots turned out beautifully.

confusion arises, now that i've tried to get the hd timeline into dvdsp. realized in order to output to sd dvd i must compress? transcode? my hdv footage to sd. so took the hdv timeline exported it using compressor, now its an mpeg2 file, dvdsp will allow me to import as an asset, BUT, during camera pans the footage is jerky and jumpy.

what are my options for best quality sd dvd from hdv timeline with 24p origin?

1.should i export into compressor and choose H.264 conversion?
2. should i export into quiktime with different settings?
3. what are the best quiktime settings for 24p footage?
4. should i export using quiktime conversion?
5. should i make an sd copy of my hd timeline in fcp then export that?
6. if so, export it into compressor or quiktime?
7. can you bring in an asset into dvdsp directly from fcp?
8. will dvdsp convert hd timeline to sd for me?
9. what about going from hdv timeline to prores to mpeg?

everything looks great when converted to mpeg EXCEPT jumpy, jerky pans. like it lost frames during conversion.

if anyone knows anything or has been successful taking 1080p24 from fcp and making beautiful sd dvd without jerky, jumpy pans i will feel so indebted.

You might want to take a look at Ken stones method to convert to Apple Proress 4.2.2 then using compressor to convert into SD for DVD,
I have used this a couple of times and looks a treat.

i am a little farther along then i was when i originally posted.

have tried different export processes, not quite happy with any, my next step was to try prores 422 thanks to ken stone.

have you found this process gives you the best dvd? compared to? are you working with 24p?
