do I need Tiger and FCP 5?

I shoot DVCAM, an Ikegami 7.

I shoot/edit an in-house commnication program twice a month,
Shoot/edit VNRs dubbed to Beta SP, shoot/edit/produce in-house safety videos to DVDs.

We have to input our in-house video communication program as mPEG 1.
Dont ask. My in-house show is shown on company wide on Windows 2000.
Anyway, Do I need FCP 5 to use/create H264?
Can H264 be used in place of an mpeg1 file?

My boss is hesitant to get the upgrade and I really cant seem to justify it although i would like to upgrade.

Its decided then...

Sorry Gary, I suspect the silence means that not a whole lot of us have taken the plunge yet. I know I haven't, because I don't need H.264, HDV, or dashboard widgets at the moment, but I do need to get some projects done :-)

I'm not sure whether H.264 will work on your Windows machines without some 3rd party software since Quicktime 7 has not yet been released for the PC.

I would take my time with this upgrade if you're on any sort of schedule, unless you have a separate system to use as a test bed. You could spend a lot of time troubleshooting otherwise. You might have a look at Apple's forum for FCP at http://discussions.info.apple.com/. There are plenty of issues being discussed over there with the Tiger/QT7/FCP5 transition.

Thanks for your reply Boyd.
The h264 issue would be the driving factor.
I'll be waiting as well then.
