Who's using 2.2 Gamma?
 

Just wanted to do a quick poll on who has switched their Mac monitor setup from 1.8 to 2.2?

Snow Leopard does this pretty much out of the box, but you have to do it manually in pre-SL. Lots of web designers do this on their pre-SL systems so it matches PCs.

I was discussing a recent post regarding flat contrast over in the EX1 section with a colleague, who was oblivious to the change, which got me wondering...

What gamma is an NTSC monitor? (I'm still learning about this stuff)

It's 2.2 - hence the change of Macs' screens from 1.8 to 2.2.

Can you explain how you change your monitor to 2.2 gamma? How does this effect using Photoshop for tweaking still photos for printing? (I'm guessing you'd have to switch it bacK to 1.8?)

Okay, to change gamma on your Mac display

- Apple menu - choose System Preferences
- Click Displays
- Click the Color tab
- Select your standard Display Profile
- Click Calibrate
- Ensure that Expert Mode is OFF for now (unchecked)
- Click Continue
- Select the 2.2 Gamma
- Click Continue
- Click D65 to select daylight 6500 colour balance
- Click Continue
- Save your profile with a sensible name, and use!

Now, as for Photoshop, there's an interesting debate on its colour profiles, and the whole printing thing, but as I'm an editor and I don't really get involved with print, I stick to 2.2. I guess if you're currently using 1.8 for print you'd want to change back for Print tasks, but switch to 2.2 for editing and web ('screen based') work. There may be some superduper way of dealing with this inside Photoshop, but I am not a Print or a Photoshop person any more.
