Sharing to Blu Ray and iMac: too hot?

I'm editing in FCP and as a final result I usually write blu-Ray disk with Toast or directly with the 'share'-command. I've been doing this on a Mac Pro 8-core, but I would want to convert to an iMac 8-core. However, I have noticed that during the conversion to the Blu-ray codec, all 8 cores of my Mac Pro are in use for say 95% and the processors reach a temperature of about 45° Celcius. Now my friends iMac even runs hot when he's just surfing on the internet with it, so I wonder if an iMac is suitable to do the heavy codec-work, without running dangerously hot? Does anyone here use this combination?

I haven't used an iMac, but I would point out that the most you can get is a quad-core iMac. I don't believe they are currently available with 8 cores.

You're quite right: the fastest iMac is a quad-core i7. That's the one my friend has, and it is a lot faster than my Mac Pro (double quad-core). But as I pointed out, it gets terribly hot, even under light use circumstances. I cannot help wondering of the processors will stay cool enough when they have to do some really heavy work.

No-one with an iMac here doing heavy videoprocessing?

I've used a 2011 MacBookPro to do what you describe and experienced no problems but I do have a fan cooling pad under it. My experience is that the temperature of the room is a key factor. As long as the room is a reasonable temperature, 75 or under, your iMac should be able to cool itself within safe parameters. Make sure that the computer has sufficient space to vent the hot air as well.

OK, thanks for the info, William. Guess I'll give it a try.
