I rarely use compressor so I can't offer a lot of advice. However this article documents one known issue, although it sounds like your problem might be different:

Beyond that, I'd suggest visiting Apple's support forum for Compressor:

When you upgraded to Tiger, the first restart after the installation should have displayed a pop-up notifying you that it found a potential security exposure in your starup items folder. If you tell it to disable the program, you will disable compressor. The service it disabled is called Qmaster and it is required.

There are other problems with FCP 4 when upgrading to Tiger. Your sysmptoms don't match the ones I described but the bottom line is that you need to reinstall Compressor I think.

you're right it did pop up- i was wondering what that was about- so i went ahead and said FIX it - is there a workaround for it? besides reinstalling compressor?

Try looking on the Apple support pages. There's plenty of people experiencing similar problems. There's one that popped up just today "RE: unable to connect to background process" with several solutions offered.

Reinstalling just the compressor update may also be enough. You need to do some work to figure it out. Sorry.
