New "Macbook" announced, but won't run FCP until March

Running the new Intel chips, so it is obviously much faster than the last Powerbook G4, but the Pro apps won't be running Universal code until March. Therefore, don't expect FCP5 to run on the new Macbook Pro or Intel iMac until then.

If you own FCP or FCStudio you will be able to swap your install disk for a new universal disc for $49 U.S.

And yes, it does still have firewire400, but no firewire 800.

I know people are probably gonna hate on me for this but follow my thought process...

If the new Macbooks are 4x as powerful as the old powerbooks and the old powerbooks could run FCP....

Then shouldn't FCP in emulation mode(rosetta) be able to run FCP AT LEAST as fast as the current powerbooks?

But that doesn't really matter the Macbooks will only be out less than a month before FCP goes native anyways.

It's doubtful that it would run it as fast as the current Powerbooks in emulation mode. Since Rosetta doesn't emulate any of the spped-boosting hooks that have been in the G4 and G5 series, I don't think raw horsepower is going to be that much of a boost. But as you say, it's only a month between the MacBook and the native software, so no biggie.

I used to run FCP on my original 400Mhz Titanium with a camera and FW harddrive daisy chained, and it worked fine. So assuming it could run on the new Macbook with Rosetta, I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem for normal cuts only editing.

The issues are probably related to real-time effects and multi-cam. I doubt Rosetta could transfer the data for real-time effects fast enough.

As discussed in another thread, none of Apple's pro app's run under Rosetta. Unfortunately you'll have to wait until March...

Curiously, Apple has a graph stating that 1080i60 HDV rendering is 2.1 times faster in Final Cut on the MacBook Pro. There is a footnote that the FCP used is a beta.
