Intel move concern from a Powermac 2.7 owner
 

I'm really concerned about what will happen or what compromises will we have to make as users of power pc structure macs. How will the new generation of software work in an hybrid environment? FInal CUt Pro 6 seems to be essential to anyone who wants to use a Pal HVX or the 24f and p functions from both Canon and Jvc. Will this run as smoothly as Final Cut 5, or slower? The same goes for the other pro applications...

Have no fear. Everything will be faster on new Intel chips, and run at the same speed on your existing PowerPC.

Since FCP6 doesn't exist and hasn't been announced, how could anyone know how well it performs? I know there are lots of rumors, but I would just relax for a little while and see what happens. Apple is upgrading FCP5 to a universal version that runs on both platforms, but it won't be available until March 31. Seems unlikely that they would then roll out FCP6 three weeks later at NAB like some people are saying. But really, nobody knows.

There is such a large base of existing G5 PowerMacs that I'd be surprised if Apple did anything to alienate its professional users. But of course you should expect any new software to take advantage of the faster machines that are no doubt coming along. Eventually I'm sure their main focus will shift to the Intel boxes, but personally I think that's a bit further down the road.

Intel Macs won't change anything for current PowerPC folks, if there's anything anybody should be worrying about, it should be how and how long it will take for Apple to effectively adjust to the Intel switch.

The Intel switch is just like another PowerPC level upgrade, just using different chips this time around.

I like Apple's marketing... "What's an Intel doing in a Mac? More than it's ever done in a PC."

Anyway, I look forward to the new Mac Intel desktop, I think it will far surpass the PC world as usual (but AMD offers some stiff competiton)
