IEEE1394 interface on DV deck with FCP

I've been using a mini-DV camera as my DV device. I recently bought a discontinued mini DV/S-VHS deck (JVC HR DVS-2) which I thought would be perfect, as I also use a VHS deck in my system. I figured I'd do away with 2 units and combine them into 1. Unfortunately, I cannot get any results when I plug the firewire directly from my Mac into the JVC deck...no picture on my monitor, or recording ability. Can anyone with any experience in this lend any insight?

i've used those jvc two-fer's before. they're ok- better than using your camera. anyhow, the dv side has to be set to the right input (i think it's "F-1.") and to get vhs onto your mac, you have to have the dv side said to "dub svhs->dv." hope that helps. also for vhs-> mac, you have no change "device control" to non-controllable device in the log and capture settings.
