Can't open files
 

I have captured a lot of footage with Vegas and saved to a LACie external drive. SInce I just got my Mac Book Pro, I want to edit that captured footage in FCP. I have an extra Maxtor 200 gig drive that I just partitioned for the Mac and I moved my AVI's over to that drive. When I clicked on a file and said to open it with Quicktime, I get an error message that says QT can't open the movie. Can I use these AVI's or do I need to recapture through FC?

I am also a new owners of a mac and I have found that you can use the avi files.

Go to File---Import--files and there they will show up, mark the avi´s that you want to import and then press choose.

Depending on how they were captured you may need a Quicktime Codec to play it. Just google quicktime codecs and download as many as you can find that are universal after that you should be able to play any kind of video file and use it in FCP. Cheers! Nate

Although you don't need it for FCP, you may get more codecs by upgrading to QuickTime Pro (30.00). I seem to remember AVI available in QT.

Also, if you can "pre-prepare your footage using QuickTime as an import/export funnel, perhaps automated a batch process with QuicKeys or Automator, maybe send those AVI's through the funnel and out as DV-NTSC mov's, so you won't have to render them in FCP.

Test a clip or two to see how they work.

Thanks for the reply but I just rented a deck for this weekend and will recapture all of my footage again onto my reformatted LaCie drive. I guess for $250 and a weekend long capture session, I can insure I will be clean and the ability to set my scratch disks.

My project is 7 episodes of a 3 camera shoot of singer/songwriters performing in studio with a short interview of each song. I was going to create a scratch disk for each artist and capture three angle and two interview angles for a total of 5 clips per artist for about an hour per artist. After capturing, I was going to cut each angle into individual songs (about 10-12 per artist) and interviews. I was then going to sync each angle and then mix each song for a single track mix which I will render individually as well as the interview. Then I will do the same for the interview. Then I can assemble my dvd however I need. If I go to broadcast, I can mix and match content and/or artists.

Anyone see a problem with this flow?
