anamorphic widescreen footage problem

I have footage shot with a VX2000 (a 4:3 camera) using a Century Optics widescreen 16:9 anamorphic adapter in which the adapter was screwed onto the front of the camera at an angle that is 90 degrees wrong, so that the resulting footage is squeezed vertically instead of horizontally.

Is there anyway to correct this footage so that it will look OK in a 16:9 widescreen project?

The aspect ratio contol under the motion tab should let you change the proportions of the clip and the scale control will let you change the size. However I think you're going to have some quality issues due to the vertical compression of the original footage. But give it a try and see what happens...

16:9 (1024*576) is 1.333 times wider than 4:3 (768*576).

So 16:9 to 4:3 is a horizontal reduction of 75%.

pink area is 16:9 ratio

You have done this vertically, so your image is vertically squeezed to 75% (also taking in more top and bottom image) top image

You need to stretch the image vertically to 133% (this will give you the correct aspect ratio - but will make your image a square) middle image

Then scale this square up to 1024*1024. bottom image

Quality will suffer, but it may be ok for you - fields (if you are using fields) will certainly be screwed.
