Error code -36
 

I'm trying to copy sme QT files from one drive to anther and get the following message

Th Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in
"FILE NAME" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)

Any ideas?

I believe the -36 Error is just a general I/O (input output) error; there are unfortunately many reasons for it popping up. MacOS doesn't really give you any useful information on what's actually wrong or how to fix it.

The only thing I can suggest is to use the Disk Utility or a commercial disk repair program such as Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro to try and check for bad blocks on the hard drives. You're probably better off with a 3rd party tool than Apple's Disk Utility (which isn't very "powerful").

Just out of interest what type of partition is the QT file on? What type of partition are you trying to copy to? There seems to be some connection between this error code and Windows partitions (FAT, NTFS, etc.).

Sorry I took so long to reply. The drive was a Lacie terrabyte and I was using Mac OS EXtended. I never use Journaled as it has nly ever given me probs.

We just ran Disc Warrior through it and that cleared it up. Ive heard this error code can sometimes be due to having too many drives daisy chained. I have also got round it by copying the file to the desktop then into the target drive, or by opening the quicktime and saving it directly to the target drive. However the Disc Warrior fixed our prob and that is obviously the best solution.

Also LaCie drives (IMO) suck. I had one completely die on me just 14 months after I bought it. Since it was 2 mo out of warranty they basically told me I was SOL.

Make sure you have backups.
