FCP Effects: Glow

I'd love to know what every effect in FCP does, but I'm going to assume no one has that kind of time. But the most important one I want to know about it the "glow" type effect. In other words, it's as though light is getting brighter in white spots until it takes over the image to what. I though I could rig it in Fade To Color / White, but it just looked bad. How is it done?

Try keyframing it so that it starts out as nothing and gets brighter at the end. Then keyframe the opposite on the incoming clip.

Alex Sprinkle December 20th, 2006 05:02 PM

what am i keyframing? contrast?

Nate Weaver December 20th, 2006 05:13 PM

Anytime you need a type effect, you should probably be starting with LiveType, and then modifying whatever you can get out of that. You'll probably get much better looking effects that way.

Add a second layer and ramp the brightness using the keyframes...give it a gausian blur effect to soften it up a bit, multiply the layer to get the darks to disappear.

I thought you meant you wanted to GLOW the picture, referring to the new GLOW effects that you get with the 5.1.2 update.

You can add that glow to text in FCP, BTW.

Alex Sprinkle December 20th, 2006 06:01 PM

No no, you were right the first time. I meant the glow effect, that TYPE of effect, not an actual effect on typing. Sorry for the confusion

Shane Ross December 20th, 2006 06:11 PM

Contrast isn't one of the options. LIGHT RAYS, for example, has Amount, Center, Glow and Expansion. If you want a 30 frame effect, then razor the last 15 frames of the outgoing shot, and 15 frames of the incoming shot (as this effect isn't real time) and then keyframe one of those.

Cool effect actually. I might have to try this one.

Light Rays? I'm not familiar with this? This is in FCP 5.0?

Shane Ross December 21st, 2006 10:12 AM

No, FCP 5.1.2. I thought we were talking about the new Motion effects that came with FCP 5.1.2. That is the only built in GLOW I see.

What are you talking about?
