FCP stops and then starts again during capture

I am capturing HDV footage using FCP 5 and the tape has (apparently) one of those infamous HDV dropouts ... and when the FCP capture encounters this part of the tape, it stops capturing, then restarts capturing as a new clip, in the process skipping about 8 seconds of footage. The dropout is about 2 seconds long, as far as I can tell. But there is an 8-second gap between the end of the original clip and the beginning of the second clip that FCP automatically starts creating. Is there any way to tell FCP to just keep capturing through the dropout without having the clip end and then a new one start up 8 seconds later?

I tried setting the capture device to "uncontrollable device" and that didn't work. Also, the start-stop detect setting in the capture settings is unchecked.

I should also mention I'm a relative newbie to FCP. Thanks.

Hi Dave,

You can check out this thread. I think it will give you insight to your problem. But the answer to your question is that there is a comon problem with trying to capture in HDV.

Thanks Carlos ... by the way, did you try unchecking the "start/stop detection" box in the capture settings? That might solve your issue.

Where exactly is that box? I can't seem to find it.

If you go to File>Log and Capture, and then click on "Clip Settings" in the Log and Capture dialog, you'll see "Create new clip on start/stop" -- uncheck this box.

Yes I switched it and it didn't make any difference. I just spent almost an hour trying to capture 5 minutes of video. Just when I think I find something that seems to work consistently, I get an error or it says it searching for media or the deck just keeps going back and forth. It is so frustrating! The only thing I can say that helped with “some limited consistency” was to mark in and out the points between the scenes, lower the pre and post roll to 1 second, and make sure there was at least 2 or 3 seconds of video before and after the in and out points. But even this didn’t work all the time. I found myself re-logging clips over and over until FCP would finally capture it.
