FCP 24p workflow for the Sony HVRV1U

I wrote this for VASST, which Spot is the senior trainer, producer, head honcho, etc.:

Have fun! (And thanks to Graeme Nattress for the big help, Patrick Speicher for the camera and Matt Beers for getting out from behind the camera. Thanks to Chris Hurd for allowing me to post this, and Spot/VASST for their continuing support.)

My pleasure,

This looks like it's only for 24p. What about 30p?

There is no pulldown in 30P

Heath McKnight February 22nd, 2007 06:08 PM

You beat me to it, Spot, thanks!

Let me ask; if the 1080i video shot at 24 or 30 fps from the V1 camera looks like 24 or 30p respectively, and the delivery is television (SD/HD), why is it neccessary to remove the pulldown?

And additionally, what would be the workflow for Avid XP?

Heath McKnight February 22nd, 2007 10:03 PM

The pulldown was created because of TV delivery and those who don't have TVs that can do this: movie DVDs are 24p and either the DVD player and/or the TV would actually add a pulldown, if either had the capability.

It makes it easier. But many of us want to remove the pulldown if we're going to 24p/progressive scan DVD or even a filmout.

I'll look into a workflow for Avid users.

Thanks Heath, I'll keep checking for the Avid workflow...(if there is one, that is...:-)

Heath McKnight February 22nd, 2007 10:17 PM

I haven't worked with Avid in a few years, so I'll talk to Spot and see what he thinks.

One thought occured to me...wouldn't Avid's Intermediate Codec allow you to capture in another flavor of HD, much like the Apple Intermediate Codec? The AIC allows you to remove the pulldown, as well.

If any Avid editors with a V1u can capture with the I.C. in Avid, and see if the pulldown can be removed, post it here!

Are you thinking of DNxHD?

Heath McKnight February 22nd, 2007 10:36 PM

Possibly. Can you try?

I am getting a demo camera for the weekend tomorrow, so I will. I am not exactly sure if Avid gives you the option to capture in the selected codec. The usual workflow is to capture in HDV and then transcode into DNxHD. I'll play with it.

I captured and change it to Photo - Jpeg at 75% quality, creating basically an Intermediate Codec. I think it might actually work.
