Smooth Gradients?
 

Hi
I'm trying to add a gradient to a scene and multiply it to the image to create a smooth falloff to the side. I created a gradient in photoshop and in final cut itself but the results in both cases are really poor with visible banding across the gradient. What can I be doing wrong? I have tried in vain to search the manuals and online but have yet to find a solution.

Are you viewing the results on your computer monitor or a well setup video monitor?
I am going to guess that you are editing in the highly compressed DV format.
If you want great results with gradients then you might think about working in 10bit uncompressed.

Banding is often a result of compression, particularly noticeable on soft edges, gradients and feathers. You could try a different codec.

But the end result has to go back to DV tape. I have used the inbuilt gradient in Final cut pro as it works perfectly. However, images imported from photoshop with the same type of gradient look awful.
