Previewing & Recording at 3/4 speed...why?

I recently shot about 30 minutes worth of footage on my new XH A1 in HD. Since I do not have FCP, I used iMovie 6 HD.

While I was loading it, I noticed a small message just above the volume that said "Capturing HD at 3/4 speed." From time to time, it will fluctuate from 1/2 speed to 3/4 speed to full speed.

When I play my video clips, it will say "Previewing HD at 3/4 speed."

Why does it say that?? I'm frustrated because the audio and video are not synched. I read from other people that even a slower machine than mine are working fine. Do I need more ram?

I am using a PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 with 3.5 gb ram.
