Long wait when overwriting w/ transition

I am on FCP 5.1.4 on a g5 Dual 1.8
All SD video minimal color correction 30fps

Since the last 2 upgrades to FCP, I have noticed extended wait times when trying to apply a transition to the entire timeline (overwrite w/ transitiion)

Normally I am dealing with an hour to 2 hours of footage and I am only adding a brief cross disolve. (.08)

When I select the footage and drag it to the overwrite w/ transition box in the canvas, I get a spinning ball for up to 10 minutes. God forbid if my hand moves the mouse during this time, the transition won't even take!
If by some chance the transition is applied it takes another 5-10 minutes to process the command.

Is there a setting that I do not have right or is this just something that happened in an upgrade?

ANy help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I still have 10 more dance recitals to edit and would like to have this resolved soon.

Once you've already added color correction or other filters to your timeline footage, successive renders of the affected content can definately take longer than if you were just rendering non-affected footage.

If the render time seems atrociously lengthy, check your timeline settings and make sure something didn't corrupted in your preferences.

Just curious though, if you are just adding a cross dissolve between two clips, why do you have to re-render the entire timeline? Seems to me it should just require rendering the noted :08 segment onto which you are applying the dissolve.

Not trying to render

Jon,

My problem is not in rendering time. My problem is the time FCP is taking to actually apply the transition. When I drag my video track to the overwrite buttton it stalls with a spinning ball for about 5-10 minutes (depending on the lenghth of my track) then it takes another 5-10 minutes just to apply the transitions and overwrite the track. This used to take a matter of seconds, now since the last couple of updates this process has gotten longer and longer. Rendering is not the problem. Applying the transitions is.
