Next ?, Codec Stuff

Does my FPC3, G4 Dual proccessor have a codec that will create an AVI file that can be read by microsoft mpeg 1,2,3 codec?

i think i said that right. our company wide system is about 4-5 years old and has only that encoder.....

If you export out of QuickTime Pro, AVI is an option. MPEG-1, 2, and 4 are not MS standards and PC's should have no problem playing an AVI encoded in QT.

except that our IT guys just told me they refuse to download Quicken to 4,000 computers, even tho its free. they will not take on the extra support load. hows that? so i shoot digi, edit digi and then dump to vhs so these guys dont have to work!!!!
very frustrating.

sorry, should read "Quick Time"

Jeff Donald May 23rd, 2003 08:22 AM

They would not need to use QT. Windows Media Player will play back the AVI's you create in QT. If you outline the whole flow I'll better be able to describe the flow. But it certainly won't be any extra work for anyone.

well, ill try to explain how it is done now.......
company wide video newsletter. before i got here, outside freelancer shot on gl1- edit in FPC dump to VHS, brought to my company IT guys, they use an old pc with a $ 200 video card, encode to ASF (?) then put into system.

surely it can be done easier now that i am inhouse shooting dvcam, editing FPC, and will soon have my own server and be connected to our intranet.

How long are the videos? You can encode your finished video as an AVI in QT and copy the file to a CD, DVD etc. If it's short enough you could even send it over your companies network to the IT department. The present MS software on your companies computers would read the files without the need for any other software (i.e. wouldn't need QT).
