HDV Hosting

Hi All - I shot some HD Video on my personal HDR-HC3 and would like to post it on the web for family and friends to see. We have a large family, so I expect it will get quite a few hits. I would also like to keep the HDV format. Is there a sight like "You Tube" that hosts HD Video? Should I just break down and buy my own site, and if so, what type of bandwith, etc. Also, any sugestions on whom to go with?

Thanks all!

Jason,

for what you have in mind, I'd start by looking into providers that offer free web hosting. You'll have to live with some banner advertising, but there are companies out there that do not specify a bandwidth limit. They may kick you out if the bandwidth required for your site is way too excessive, but even if that happens it'll be an easy and cheap way to find out what bandwidth you should really expect.

As for the format, when you say you would like to keep the HDV format, what exactly do you mean? The 16:9 aspect ratio of the picture? (Probably yes). The high resolution of 1080 lines? (Probably not.) If your goal is to make your videos easily viewable for anyone, then look into Flash - which is considered by many the video format with the widest acceptance rate for the web. QuickTime, RealVideo and WMF are also popular choices.

- Martin

No point. The people at the other end won't be able to stream it. They can barely stream full-resolution standard definition footage; they wouldn't stand a chance in HD. IF streaming is not an issue then just get your own Web site.
