Aerial Ski video with GoPro and Quadcopter

A little over a year ago I help start a project that utilized Quadcopters to film aerial video using small HD cameras like the GoPro. Its crazy how fast 1 year goes by, but it is also crazy how much better we have gotten. Here is out latest video showing off what you can do with one of our helicopters.

We are currently flight testing with a Sony NEX-5n, and want to continue to improve the aerial platform.

Impressive work. Ski films just got a whole lot more interesting.

What can I say. "Mesmerising" might go close. The skier in the jumps visibly coming closer to the camera then dropping away - magic.

Excepting for loss of signal and lighting, one of these things could have a role in mine rescues when mine still full of toxic gases and loose debris stops a cat robot.

No doubt, the military will be playing with them already.

Well done Wes. You nailed it. Not only unique angles with the Quadcopter but audio suits images well. Great bit of work. As a bonus, bet it's fun.

Re: Aerial Ski video with GoPro and Quadcopter

I can vouch for the XP2 quad as a very stable way to get aerial video. Check them out! XP2 RC Aerial Video Quadcopter | Xpro Heli

I have an aerial video playlist with a lot of stuff shot with my XP2. I'm saving up to get a Sony NEX-5n to get much better footage than the GoPro Hero2, though the Hero2 can get some really nice stuff too. I'm getting tired of the fish-eye look though.

Here's some stuff I got with my XP2:

It is amazing how fast multirotors are evolving, now if it was legal to to do commercial AP from them we'd have it made..

Its also equally amazing how good some people can fly these things, I'm pretty good at building them but I don't really like flying them, I can't fly nose in well at all so its nice to see good footage from a well flown quad.

Here's some of the videos I've shot:

That hexacopter vid was pretty smooth! Even if you smoothed it electronically, it still works better starting with more stable footage. What's that lens attachment on the 3rd video? Is that just a ND filter, or something to help with the 170º FOV of the GoPro? Did you make it or buy it?

Re: Aerial Ski video with GoPro and Quadcopter

It was an ND Filter that I had to modify to get it to fit the GoPro case. It didn't help with the 170 degree FOV but it slowed the shutter enough to smooth out the video in R3 (30P).

I used a Sunex lens with IR filter in the first video, unfortunately I don't think that Sunex lens works with the Hero2.

Brilliant flying Wes!
I could feel my heart in my throat as you flew through the ski lift cables. One touch and it's a long way back to pick up the pieces of your copter!
Excellent stuff!
