FAA grounds flights for video company in Minnesota

Quote:

Earlier this month, NBC reported aerial photographer Mark Bateson pointing out that many hobbyists can get away with UAV photography or videography under remote-control guidelines.

“But as soon as you turn it into a business … the FAA says you are violating the national airspace,” Bateson said.

Bummer. I was planing on hiring them later this year. I wonder if the grounding applies outside of the immediate MSP metro area?

All commercial RC flights in the entire U.S. is technically illegal until flight rules and regulations are sorted out, they say at least until 2015.

Hmm. It's a shame that those who are perhaps most responsible are made to be the example. Why experienced pilots can't fly their craft, yet every other 10-year-old with a GoPro chopper can makes no sense regarding the complaints of the FAA. I'm calling BS on the "danger to aircraft" card being played here and saying it has more to do with the so-called security risks and figuring out how operators can be licensed (taxed) to practice their craft. Ok. It's all been said before many times. I'm done. Could have really used those aerial shots...

Chris maybe add this to the disclaimer.

Casa here has just grounded 175 Hughes 4 place choppers because they haven't replaced their fuel tanks with Hughes recommended updated tanks
by midnight tonight. It took the tragic deaths of 4 retired scientists to do it.

imo the first GoPro near miss by a flyer will ground them all.

Here's an older article about another company that got grounded in Los Angeles. Their solution was to use real helicopters instead.
