Might be the same colour. One may just have the brightness set wrong.

Moot question now. I bought a DR-HD100U. It also has the brightness set low and appears to be almost black.

Or maybe the silver ones have the brightness set too high?

The silver is the older model of the FS-4. They are all black now. Not sure of the feature difference, but I imaghine it's the same as the regular black FS.
