Fs-5

Well, it certainly LOOKS a lot sleeker.

And they fixed the FAT32 thing finally, so you can get clips up to 1.5 hours long.

Of course, I've had my FS-C only 3 months, the jerks :p

Well, luckily for you, they've intentionally crippled the FS-5 so that it doesn't compete with the DR-HD100 and FS-C. It won't record to Quicktime files in 1080p24 or 720p24.

I'm looking forward to hearing them explain that at NAB. I'd really like to be able to buy one firestore that would work with all the various HDV cameras on the market, but it seems like that's just not going to happen.

I usually use m2t files. Or will it not record those either?

Admittedly this technology is on the edge of its usefulness as we get to things like solid-state non-moving-parts memory and what-not, but still, Focus is going to do themselves any favors by not making their unit as universally compatible as possible.

Doug Okamoto April 9th, 2008 04:48 PM

The FS-5 will record .m2t 720p 24/25/30/50/60 and .m2t 1080i 50/60 files.

I agree, solid state will eventually take over but not right now. Probably not for another year or so. Cost and technology are the main factors.

It also doesnt compete with the DR-hd100 because it doesnt seem to have the higher end interface camera tools. For me having a (GY-HD100) I need to choose either I spend big bucks and get a DR-HD100 Or get a FS-4 or 5 and still have to run a tape. The best thing I see about the FS-5 is now the FS-4s may go cheap!

Is this the problem referred to in the Vegas workaround by Danny Fye or will the workaround still be necessary for Vegas?

Another question although I think this one has been answered somewhere on here before. Do I have to record to tape or will the FS work without a tape in the camera, or if the tape ends, will the FS continue recording?

Anyone have one yet??

The FS-5 uses UDF file format which allows you to capture files up to 90 minutes!

Here are just a few of the workflow improvements the FS-5 provides:
• Capture your entire video as one continuous clip with UDF file support which eliminates any possibility of audio sync or re-linking errors caused by other file systems.
• Provides Native Quicktime HDV support for Final Cut Pro users and HDV MXF support for Avid users.
• Add metadata information to your clips while you are shooting templates which have been pre-designed for the kind of footage you shoot.
• Fast and flexible metadata generation and custom logging capabilities allow you to organize your clips in the field - editing becomes much faster and more efficient.
• Use a wireless device like an iPod Touch or Laptop to export your native metadata files (XML or embedded) to the FS-5 while you are shooting.

The FS-5 also includes these great new features:
• USB 2.0 connectivity allows quick, easy attachment and mounting to just about any Laptop or NLE workstation.
• Smaller size and longer recording times combined with our new Silent Operation design (no fan) insures that the FS-5 will work in even the trickiest of shooting environments.
• Scroll wheel and 4 programmable function keys makes operating and using the FS-5 simple.
• Wired and Wireless (with optional adapter) Network capabilities allow you to share your FS-5 files with multiple users on your network for enhanced editing collaboration. Wireless requires a USB WLAN adapter like the one we're including FREE for a limited time with your FS-5 purchase! Intro Special expires 7/31/08
