FileStore FS-4 Passthru

Does the FileStore FS-4 have the ability to pass along the DV stream through the second 1394 port while simultaneously recording?

No,

That is, not to any other device except for another FS-4. But you should be able to split the DV stream with a FW hub in front of the FS-4, giving you the option to send the DV signal to the FS-4 and another device at the same time.

MAKE SURE THAT THE DV HUB IS NOT POWERED WHEN YOU PLUG IT INTO THE DV I/O ON THE FS-4!

Hello Daniel,
My goal is to be able to capture the DV stream for future use and simultaneously send the DV stream to a computer for live broadcast via Windows Media Encoder.

I have tried to do this in software and been unsuccessful.

So I was hoping a hardware solution was available.

Will any firewire hub accomplish this?
What if it is classified as a 'repeater hub'?

I was looking at these devices based on your post:
http://www.granitedigital.com/catalo...erepeaters.htm

Will one of these work?
Or can you suggest another option?

Thank you

Derek,

One of those should work. Make sure that you use a FW 400 hub/Repeater otherwise the connectors wont fit.

I think that all FW hubs are also repeaters (at least all that have the option to be powered). The repeater function acts as a kind of power booster so that you can extend the length of the FW cable.

You should be able to accomplish what you are trying to do by using the FW hub / repeater together with a camera and computer, two computers, or the FS-4 and a computer.

You just have to be really careful with the FS-4 because it has a 6 pin FW jack as DV input (probably for physical stability reasons) and that can lead to damage to the FW chip-set in the FS-4 if there is power on the extra 2 pins. If you connect the hub to the FS-4 I would suggest using a 4 pin to 6 pin adapter somewhere in the chain, in order to eliminate any chance of power entering the DV I/O on the FS-4.

I used this set-up to capture to a FS-4 and a DVD recorder at the same time a while back - so it should work for what you are doing.

Thanks Daniel - I will give it a try with 2 computers first.
