CMOS Global Shutter

In December 2003 Kodak released the linked Application Note for CMOS Global Shutter.

Any ideas as to why - in April 2009 - we are still dealing with motion and flash artifacts caused by CMOS rolling shutter?

It's starting to happen, I think. There's a camera I read about that solves the rolling shutter effect. Unfortunately, I can't remember which model.

I think we're still saddled with this problem because of manufacturing lead times and inventory. Although technology seems to change overnight. The reality is it takes time for these new revelations to trickle down through the supply chain. Since "global shutter" CMOS chips are apparently available, it would be logical to assume they'd show up in a bunch of cameras before long.

Tripp - yikes - the Kodak notes were 2003 :-0

Everyone of the new camcorders I am looking at have one or two "show stoppers". Oddly - some other manufacturer does not have those show stoppers but some different ones.

Some other thread hit it on the head - they need to get together and compare notes. Of course that would reduce our trading cameras in search of the perfect solution - lower sales.

You can have global shutter CMOS chips, but they are expensive and complex to produce. So if they did come about you would see them on the high end before the low end.

Excellent point. Prices will drop as the manufacturing intricacies are simplified.

I only hope I live long enough to see it.
