HD Broadcast Format

Hey All,
I'm a commercial producer in Gainesville, FL for the CBS/MNT/NBC affiliate. Just today my GM and Engineer stopped in my office and informed me that we would have the ability to begin to air 1080 quality video, for in-house promos, commercials and shows.

My engine, assuming I have a good grasp on everything he knows asked me if I can output MPEG-2 finished spots. In the past, I've not needed to. With FCP 5 and Compressor 2 I can edit HD footage and output a lot of ways (including MPEG-4, which I'm told is not good for broadcast). Can anyone steer me in the right direction or do I simply need to update to the newest version of Compressor, which my GM doesn't want to hear.

Thanks for any help!

well ?

You would need the latest version of FCP or you will have problems . I do consulting for NBC
in wpb fl . It took me two years to convince them to upgrade their editing computers . So sad that all stations are like this . Including your stubborn GM lol jus kidding

I'm such an idiot.

Compressor does have MPEG-2. I'm just a retard. Nevermind.

Matt,
Considering that a software upgrade to the latest version of Final Cut Studio is not a significant amount of money for a Tv Station of even the smallest markets then I would think your GM is being penny wise pound foolish if that is all you needed to output Mpeg 2. On the other hand you might need to buy a new computer and harddrives and monitors eventually which could really become a noticeable line item.
