How do you think people are going distribute even 720p24 when it's not even practical to do 640x480 yet?

Not until everybody gets fiber directly to their homes, and are pulling 50mbit down...a few years away, at the very least.

Bandwidth is extremely cheap now... I can get it for 10cents a gig... a 2 hour HDV movie would be about 4+ gig...

so about 25cents cost to distribute...


Do you think people are willing to wait overnight for a file like that?

HDV is 25Mbps, so 2 hours will be ca. 25GB.

I think AVC(h.264 like apple want's to call it) will be the next big delivery codec after mpeg2. I've done some subjective visual testing with Nero Digital and one can get dvd quality with almost 1Mbps.
Apple has showed avc-hd with its qt7 with 8Mbps and I have undersood that is also target bitrate in avc-broadcasting (hd in Europe) and hd-dvd.

So maybe adsl(2+/2++/3?) will be enough for households for a while.
At least if they are not sharing their videos out...

When I complete the HD flick I'm working on I will upload several versions, and likely distribute them via bit torrent.

For compatibility purposes I will probably compress with Soronson3 and WM9. At 1920x1080 (really 1920x818), 1440x613, 1280x545, 854x363 (or 720x363 if the PA ratios work out in-codec), and 480x204.

There are plenty of ways to get true SD or HD material on the web through p2p networks, but hosting streaming video at that resolution puts a huge strain on people's servers.

Right now the bulk of the HDV samples I've seen posted on the internet are in fact Windows Media HD at a bit rate of roughly 5 Mbps. It would be difficult to transmit a very long file that way, but it can be done.

I hear a lot of talk about h.264, but I've yet to see any actual examples.

Maybe that's because really working encoders and decoders that uses all its enhancements are just coming.

Right now I know 3 major players in encoders: envivio, sorenson squeeze4 and nero recode2.
From those I think envivio is the only one who offers free player.
